The message from the investment forum

At the second Azerbaijan International Investment Forum on 26 September 2026, President Ilham Aliyev stressed the importance of expanding renewable energy and reducing natural-gas use in electricity generation. The stated direction is to increase the role of solar and wind in the energy mix and leave more gas available for export. Coverage of the remarks also described an ambition for renewables to become more widespread over the next five years. Report on the forum remarks.

One point matters for accuracy: the speech did not give a national gas-savings figure. Estimates for individual power projects should not be presented as a country-wide forecast.

What the official figures do — and do not — say

The Ministry of Energy’s overview dated 22 September 2026 lists 2,170 MW of installed renewable capacity, equal to 21.5% of total installed capacity. It estimates 27 GW of economic potential, including about 23 GW of solar and 3 GW of wind. Installed capacity and resource potential are not the same as actual electricity generation. The ministry also publishes project-level estimates. For example, the Gobustan project is associated with an estimated 45 million m³ of gas savings per year. That is a project estimate, not a reported national total.

Equipment is a system, not a single panel

A solar project can include modules, inverters, mounting structures, protection and metering, transformers and grid-connection equipment. Battery energy storage may be needed for backup or a defined operating profile; an off-grid installation also needs a properly sized controller and reserve capacity. Wind equipment requires a site assessment, logistics planning and a realistic maintenance plan.

A practical supplier brief

  • Share the site location, grid connection limits and an hourly or seasonal consumption profile.
  • State the required capacity, voltage, phase, frequency and operating conditions.
  • Request module and inverter certificates, warranty terms, spare-parts availability and service arrangements.
  • For batteries, compare usable capacity, cycle life, controls and safety documentation.
  • Confirm exactly what is included: monitoring, mounting, protection, transformer, packing and commissioning support.

Compare the complete system against the project brief, not just the headline price per panel or kilowatt. Yield and payback depend on the site, grid, installation and local technical requirements.
