Size the generator from the load—not the product listing

When sourcing an industrial generator from China, “how many kVA?” is a starting question, not a complete specification. Pumps, compressors and other motors can draw high starting current. Standby and prime ratings also describe different duty cycles. Do not compare offers until the supplier states the rating and test conditions in writing.

Start your supplier search with the TEAM A→Z industrial generator category. Have an electrical engineer review the load schedule to reduce the risk of choosing an undersized or unnecessarily large set.

Include these details in the RFQ

  • Total and critical loads, kW/kVA, power factor and simultaneous-use scenario.
  • Motor starting current, load steps and acceptable transfer time.
  • Voltage, frequency, phase count, neutral and earthing requirements.
  • Prime or standby duty, daily runtime and annual operating hours.
  • Fuel type, tank capacity, expected consumption and ambient temperature.
  • Noise limit, enclosure, ventilation, exhaust and installation location.

Ask for the engine and alternator make/model, controller, whether an automatic transfer switch (ATS) is included, battery and charger details, protections and factory load-test scope.

What to verify in the quotation

**Rating and conditions.** Confirm the temperature, altitude and duty cycle used for the stated output. Make sure standby output is not presented as continuous prime capacity.

**Configuration.** List the generator, acoustic enclosure, ATS, fuel tank, cables, battery and remote monitoring separately. Ask which items are included and which are optional.

**Testing and documentation.** Request a photo of the nameplate and serial number, factory load-test record, operation manual, spare-parts list and documents relevant to the exact model. Put warranty scope in writing.

**Freight and installation.** A generator can be heavy or oversized. Confirm packed dimensions and gross weight, lifting points, fuel-drain requirements, battery transport rules and how the unit will be unloaded at destination.

Pre-order checklist

1. Load schedule and starting current have been reviewed by an engineer.

2. The offer clearly states prime or standby rating and test conditions.

3. Engine, alternator, controller and ATS models are specified.

4. Factory testing, warranty and spare parts are documented.

5. Packaging, heavy/oversize freight and unloading have been planned.

### What is the difference between kVA and kW?

kW is real power and kVA is apparent power; their relationship depends on power factor. Generator sizing should account for actual loads, motor starts and the required duty cycle.

### Is an ATS always included with a generator?

No. Confirm the ATS model, current rating, phase configuration and installation scope in the quotation.

### What are common risks when buying a generator from China?

An incorrect duty rating, an unapproved engine or alternator substitution, unverified noise/fuel figures and underestimated heavy-freight costs. Confirm the specification and factory test before dispatch.
